Friday Finds: Things to Read, Watch, and Check Out

We took our first trip to the Carlsbad Flower Fields this week.

My kids are on spring break this week so we’re headed out to the Palm Springs area for a mini getaway. I can’t wait for some time by the pool with a good book! Here are some things I’ve enjoyed or found interesting lately. If you’re also on spring break, I hope you’re doing something fun!

A solar eclipse is coming on April 8th and you’ll need eclipse glasses to watch it safely. Here’s a helpful article on how to find a legit pair. (Time)

Speaking of the eclipse, He Said/She Said is a thriller about a couple who chase eclipses that I read right before the last solar eclipse crossed the U.S. in 2017. Highly recommend!

“Is ‘Self Care Culture’ Becoming Bad For Us?” (The Powder Room) is a thought-provoking look at how the internet version of self care has taken on a moral element and isn’t inclusive to those for whom basic “self care” tasks are extra challenging, such as overworked single parents or neurodivergent individuals.

What I’m Reading

The New House by Tess Stimson (on Audible) is a tale of real estate gone wrong… so so wrong. I couldn’t stop listening even when it got a little disturbing. Probably a faster read on the page, but overall I enjoyed listening.

Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson is a throwback to the mystery novels of Agatha Christie. While it’s hard to describe, it’s different from most of the current mystery/suspense novels I typically read. The characters are quirky and awkward in a Schitt’s Creek way, but the mystery is compelling and the more I read, the more I like it.

What I’m Watching

I basically ripped through The Bear while my husband was out of town for a few days and I love it. I try to avoid watching it right before bed because it’s high-octane and there’s a lot of yelling, which doesn’t set me up for falling asleep.

My sister came down for Easter and we watched the third installment of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. While it was fun to see some old, familiar faces, part three just didn’t have the charm of the first two movies.
