Sometimes you want a craft that doesn’t include expensive supplies. This diy witch hat and broom garland is perfect because you probably already have most of what you need!
You’ll want to use paper egg cartons rather than plastic for this project. It doesn’t really matter if they’re plain or colored because you’ll be painting them. Who knew trash could become a fun Halloween decoration?!
You can embellish the hats with whatever you have on hand. I used simple jute twine because I already had a roll, but ribbon or yarn would also be cute. A little fake moss would be fun too.
So let’s make this easy garland to add some witchy fun to your Halloween decor!
Supplies
- paper egg cartons
- scissors
- craft paint
- hot glue gun & glue sticks (this is the cordless one I have)
- jute twine or ribbon
- small twigs
How to Make a Witch Hat and Broom Garland
First, cut your egg cartons into pieces you can use for the witch hats and brooms. Each carton provides five pointy pieces. I used the flat part of the lids to cut out circles for the witch hat brims.

Once your pieces are cut, trim the edges to neaten them up. You’ll cut small slits in the pieces you want to use for the brooms. Be careful not to cut all the way through the pointed end.

Next, paint all the pieces and let them dry. I used basic black for the hats and an espresso color for the brooms. Because I was waiting for more hot glue sticks to arrive, I painted everything first, but you could also attach the pointy pieces to the round brims before painting.

When all the paint is dry, you’ll attach your pointy hat pieces to the brims with hot glue if you haven’t already. Don’t worry about it being too perfect because the twine or ribbon will cover any gaps.
Use a small dab of hot glue to secure the twine and loop it around the hat. Then tie it in a bow and trim the ends.

If the pointy pieces you’re using for the brooms are flat at the top, you’ll need to cut a small hole for the twig to go through to form the broom handle. Apply some hot glue to the inside of the point and then slide a twig through the opening. Hold the twig in place and let the glue harden a bit.

Finally, use hot glue to attach the hats and brooms to a longer piece of twine or string. Now your witch hat and broom garland is ready to hang!

Garlands are such a great way to add a seasonal touch to your mantel. I also love using them on the large window in my kitchen and across the bookcases in our living room. So really, anywhere you want 😉
It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of seasonal decor. If you want more ideas about how to change up your decor for any season, be sure to check out this post on seasonal swaps!
